CHS members get $518M in profit-sharing this year

When you own a business, you get to enjoy the profits. And for the farmers who own cooperative giant CHS Inc., the profit-sharing checks are starting to arrive.

The Inver Grove Heights-based farm and energy cooperative said Wednesday it is in the process of distributing $518 million back to the farmers and ranchers who own the company. The big payout is a result of net income of $1.1 billion this past year, the second-best in CHS’s long history.

In Minnesota, that amounts to $58.5 million to 14,000 farmers and co-ops, coming in the form of “cash patronage and equity redemptions.” The size of those patronage checks is based on the amount of business done with the cooperative.

In Wisconsin, CHS said it is distributing $32.9 million to 1,900 farmers and local co-ops. CHS ranks as the nation’s largest cooperative.
